3005 – “The greatest man who ever lived or will ever live”: The story of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor – Part 2

In this second episode of the life of Charles V Holy Roman Emperor we continue the story of his reign and of the conflicts in the first half of the 16th Century that shaped Europe and the world. The ruler of an empire is forever in the saddle and so it was with Charles. Conflict began in the year of the Diet of Worms when the French under Francis 1 invaded Lombardy in Italy. Charles was to fight four wars with the French king and prevail in all of them. At this early stage, Francis did not understand how formidable this new Duke of Burgundy was, but he was determined to wrest from him as much of Italy as he could, at the same time resolving ancient conflicts between France and the Burgundians.

This episode was written by Lt. Col. Chris Alroe.

The title of this podcast comes from a claim made by Charles V ‘s private secretary Luis Quijada about him and says something about the extraordinary devotion this monarch inspired in his people. That statement is remarkable in that most people have either never heard of this ruler or know almost nothing about him and yet there are grounds for the claim.
