WSS104 – Is this just real, or is it just fantasy?

In this episode of the Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy Podcast, the team chat about something a little different, fantasy wargaming. How does it compare with historical gaming? Is one better than the other, or is it all just about enjoying the game, whatever the setting?

Before diving into the discussion, Guy brings us the latest news from the hobby.

That was a good discussion, guys. I’d also like to suggest that some “historical games” border on “fantasy” when all (or most) historical elements have been abandoned. Confusing historical facts with the “Hollywood” version seems to be the most common cause for this behavior. For example, the Battle of Rorke’s Drift was almost entirely fought in the dark of night (the Zulus arrived at the mission station at dusk). I have yet to see a tabletop miniatures game that takes this vital factor into consideration (nor have I seen a board game that has done so).
I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s less of a difference between putting on a battle from the Classical Age (with all the limits to information given the subject) and a battle from the Lord of the Rings (the novel, not those awful films).
